This year, the first day of spring falls on March 19th, but of course, the flowers don’t know that. They can sense the days growing longer and the temperatures getting warmer. This is how they know that it’s time to start growing and getting ready to bloom.

In the United States, we mark the first day of spring with the vernal equinox, but people in other parts of the world track the seasons using different means, like the lunar calendar. Some people just wait to hear from the flowers. In Japan, spring doesn’t officially begin until their national flowers, the cherry blossoms, start to bloom.

When Do Flowers Bloom During Spring?

The first flowers of the year don’t even wait for spring to arrive before blooming. Even in cold climates, snowdrops, Lenten roses, and crocuses fight the frost to sometimes bloom as early as late January.

The first true spring flowers start blooming around the end of March. These early bloomers include tulips, irises, hyacinth, pansies, and daffodils. Other spring flowers need more time in the sun to grow before they’re ready to bloom. Roses, peonies, lilacs, daisies, and bluebells won’t blossom until May or June.
