Birthday Fireworks

The earliest recorded mention of a birthday is in the Bible, which outlines a Pharaoh’s birthday celebration in approximately 3,000 BC. Experts agree that this was more likely a coronation ceremony, when the rulers were considered to be “birthed” as gods. Moving through history, the Greeks picked up on the theme of celebrating the gods, and added to candles to cakes baked to the goddess Luna to simulate her glow in the night sky. For hundreds of years Christians did not observe birthdays. However, in the 4th century, Christmas was adopted as the celebration of Christ’s birthday, transforming the pagan. festival of Saturnalia into a day for the faithful.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the birthday as we know it began to emerge. In Germany, cakes were baked for Kinderfeste, and candles added for each year of the child’s life. The Industrial Revolution allowed for the mass distribution of birthday cakes; and in 1924, an American songbook was published with a remix of 1893’s “Good Morning to All” – changing the lyrics to “Happy Birthday to You”.
