What’s in a Name? The word delphinium is derived from the Greek word delphis, or delphin, which means “dolphin.” The name refers to the flower’s curving, dolphin-like shape. Delphinium is also known as larkspur, as its blooms resemble the sharp claws, or spurs, of the lark’s foot; in fact, William Shakespeare called it “lark’s heel”.
