Known as either Independence Day or the Fourth of July, the day has been recognized as a United States federal holiday since 1941. However, the legacy of July 4^th hearkens back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. In June 1776, members of the 13 colonies, embroiled in their struggle against Britain, created a resolution that would declare independence from their former government. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and on July 4^th Thomas Jefferson’s historic document, the Declaration of Independence was ratified.

After the Revolutionary War, Independence Day was celebrated annually in ways that helped the new political leaders to create a feeling of nationalism and unity. The legacy of patriotic festivities became more prolific after the War of 1812, although it was not made a federal holiday until 1870. As time went on, the political import of the holiday lessened, but July 4^th became an important celebration of national pride for American citizens.
